Where are the frontlines of health?
The frontlines of health are all around us. They include areas across Canada where individuals are unserved or underserved by our mainstream healthcare system: from remote and rural communities and inner city streets to suburban neighbourhoods, the people in these areas are geographically, socially or culturally isolated from the mainstream healthcare system.
Who are the patients on the frontlines of health?
Patients on the frontlines of health represent all facets of Canadian society. They may be members of remote, rural or aboriginal communities; street youth; isolated seniors; drug users and addicts; the homeless; new immigrants and refugees. Anyone who is beyond the reach of the mainstream healthcare system because of language, culture, poverty, choice of lifestyle or location, is a patient on the frontlines.
What are some of the biggest challenges of healthcare on the frontlines?
There are many challenges such as the lack of consistent quality care, the lack of healthcare providers, the vast geography of our country and its vibrant diversity. The Frontline Health program acknowledges these challenges, but focuses on solutions and innovation. By sharing the stories of innovation and triumph, building awareness of the issue and identifying best practices, we hope to extend mainstream healthcare to better serve marginalized populations.
